Our paths will cross out there for sure! I'm lookin' forward to whole thing!
I really dig your black and white marvel cards in the post below. I'm always amazed at how something so clean and simple can still get my immediate attention. And I love seeing other artists take a stab at an already established character. Neat stuff.
Hey Robin!
I'll see you there! I'll be at the Flight table helping out. :) I've also been kicking around Vancouver some this summer. Vicki and I are working at the same studio.

Oh man,
Its gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeeeet...
HI EVERYONE, THIS POST IS COMING FROM SKOTTIE YOUNG'S BLOG -
I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE READ:
"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the desire to be very grown up."
C.S. Lewis said this when people asked him why he wrote books for children. This reminds me to keep in mind the origin of what I love most...drawing. Before I knew what Marvel or D.C. was, before I knew what a comic book, or super hero was, I drew pictures. I love drawing. I can't recall what I liked drawing the most, probably because I drew so much there is no way to remember. I drew all the time, with any tool that created a line on paper.
Amongst the contracts, negotiations, signings, failed projects, good and bad reviews, deadlines, tussles with editors and studio execs., 35 airports a year, the same convention halls over and over, and anything else that goes along with the professional artist label...it is easy for me to forget what I wanted to do this for.
I love drawing.
That's the end of it really. I love it. I love the kid that lives here no matter how many books I sell, or how much money I put in the bank. I need to remind myself to put away the childish "desire to be very grown up." and just put pencil to paper. I never used to need anyone to like what I drew. I didn't know to want it. I just wanted to turn a blank piece of paper into something, anything, just as long as it looked fun. An animal, a world that I have never seen, a twist on the world I have. Amongst all the things that have over shadowed that ideal, I have lost the child.
After hearing this quote, I wrote it down and pinned it on the bulletin board in front of my table. That's why these warm up drawings started happening. I always told myself I didn't have time to draw anything for fun, I had to work. But, like those parents who have kids and need to make time for them no matter what...I am reminding myself to do the same.
PLEASE GO TO SKOTTIE YOUNG'S BLOG AND COMMENT THERE
AND REMIND YOURSELF TO DO THE SAME
THANKX

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING
YOU ARE SO FAR THE SECOND ONE WHO HAS RESPONDED TO THIS POSITIVELY
I'VE POSTED THIS TO EVERYONE I LIKE AND/OR RESPECT
SOME I LIKE FOR THE CREATION BUT NOT ENOUGH TO TALK TO OR PRAISE
I JUST CHECKED WHO COMMENTED AND WHO DIDN'T
IT SHOWS WHO MIGHT CARE OR NOT OR WHO JUST DOESN'T WANT TO BE INVOLVED
I GOT TAKEN OFF BY 4 BLOGS, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND COMMENTS SO FAR ONE DUE TO POSTING LONG POSTS AND THE OTHER FROM A HIGH PROFITE CREATOR TELLING ME WHY I DID NOT PRAISE HIM ON HIS WORK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES
SORRY I DIDN'T READ THE RULEBOOK ON BLOGGING, SHOW IT TO ME AND I'LL GO BACK TO THE ANT'S/SHEEPLE MARCHING LINE, THEN AND ONLY THEN I WILL KEEP QUIET
THEIR SAYING LETS IGNORE IT AND LET IT TAKE US OVER
I CARE AND I LOVE COMIC BOOKS AND OTHER ENTERTAINMENT
I DON'T THINK THESE BLOGS ARE JUST FOR BROWN-NOSING AND PUMPING UP EGOS
THE INTERNET IS GIVEN TO US TO GIVE US THE OPPROTUNITY TO BE HEARD
I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT TODAY TO REMIND THE CURRENT CROP OF CREATORS TO REEVALUATE THEIR THINKING CONSISTANTLY OF WHY THEY ARE THERE WHILE THE REST OF US STRUGGLE EVER HARDER THAN THEM
AND APPRECIATE THE BUYERS/READERS/COLLECTORS/FANS
/RETAILERS/SUPPORTERS
EVERY DOLLAR THEY USE IS MOST LIKELY TAKEN FROM SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN AN ENTERTAINMENT LIKE COMIC BOOKS
WE DO NOT HAVE TO SUPPORT YOU
IF FACT THAT MIGHT BE A REAL GOOD REASON WHY THE READERSHIP HAS BEEN CUT DOWN TO HALF
PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF THE BULL
EVERYONE APART OF THE INDUSTRY IS RESPONSIBLE "WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY" FOR THE WAY IT CURRENTLY IS
FROM PRODUCER TO DISTRIBUTOR TO RETAILER AND RETAILER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AS WELL AS THE LOOK OF A STORE
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER
AGAIN THANK YOU
I'LL BE AT SDCC, SEE YA THERE
THIS IS WHO POSTED POSITIVELY TOWARDS MY LONG POST:
1) ROB CORLEY
2) YOU, ROBIN MITCHELL :)
3) TIM KANE
THESE ARE WHO LEFT A COMMENT AT SKOTTIE'S BLOG:
(MOST LIKELY BECAUSE I LEFT MY POST AT THEIRS)
4) MIKE KUNKEL
"REMEMBER YOUR CHILDHOOD AND PASS IT ON"
5) CRISTOPHER "CRISPY" COPELAND
6) JAMAL IGLE
AND...
7) "BIGG GUNN"
ALL OF YOU ARE TOPS IN MY BOOK
THANKX AGAIN!
hey onesickindividual, thanks man
hey comixguy, since i am a big proponent of free speech it would be weird for me to edit anyone. The only time i think i would do that, is to stop abuse and you are no where near that, in fact quite the opposite. keep the love up!!
THANKX BUD!!!!
DEFINITELY WILL!
YOU DEFINITELY DESERVE TO BE #2!
ITS IMPORTANT TO GET THOSE TYPES OF MESSAGES OUT THERE
ya know skottie didn't have to say all that, all he had to say was:
just create. be a kid again.
but without the extra stuff no one would have taken that message to heart
BUT......
I DO REALIZE MOST WANT TO HOG THE SPOTLIGHT 24/7 AND IGNORE THE LITTLE GUY WITH HIS small lettering and short posts, that's why I TYPE BIG AND POST LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNG
SO I CAN CUT THROUGH THAT
BE SEMI- TAKEN SERIOUSLY ONLY IF IT GETS THOSE AWESOME PEOPLE IN THAT LIST TO POST AND OTHERS TO TAKE NOTICE OF THE MESSAGE
just create. be a kid again.
THAT'S ENOUGH FOR ME
SO.....
i'm going back to my small lettering, short to the point posts, praise them and buy their stuff
since that's what most creators really want afterall
BUT....
WHEN THERE IS A MESSAGE THAT I THINK SHOULD BE "SEEN" I WILL GET "LOUD" AGAIN AND DO ALL OF THIS ALL OVER AGAIN
thanks again, see ya next week! we'll take about this more if you like, don't worry i don't "sound" like this in real life :)
Really insightfull posts comixguy. Do you have a blog with more inspirational outlooks ?
Hey comixguy, you crack me up!! :)
and Kev you too!!
"Kevin Barber said...
Really insightfull posts comixguy. Do you have a blog with more inspirational outlooks ? "
WHAT, ARE YOU THE BOUNCER HERE AT ROBIN MITCHELL'S BLOG, THE BLOG COPS?
WHO INVITED THE WOMAN IN THIS
ALL - MALE'S CLUB?
WHERE'S GAIL SIMONE WHEN YOU NEED HER?
OOOOOOOOOOOOH! HE'S GOTS ME! THE PAIN, THE PAIN!
translation of what was said above:
"hey, comikxguy, i have an idea for you that you should really do:
why don't you put these on your OWN blog so the rest of us won't be bothered by you, sound like a plan"?
:)
SURE, BUT THIS IS MORE FUN, WHEN I GET TIRED OF IT, I'LL PUT IT ON A BLOG THAT NO ONE BUT ME WILL VISIT, THIS WAY I GET TO MAKE YOU SEE THEM AND NOT IGNORE THEM
I'M ADVERTIZING SOMETHING GOOD NOT BAD, BUT YES SOMETHING PEOPLE HERE DON'T WANT
KEV, DOES THAT MEAN IF I FIND ANY I SHOULD PUT YOU AT THE TOP OF THE LIST?
I WILL BE MORE THAN WELCOME TO POST THEM AT YOUR PLACE FIRST AND TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT OFF OF YOU FOR A LITTLE WHILE
OF COURSE I'M HOPING YOU WERE BEING SERIOUS AND NOT SARCASTIC
:)
I REALLY DO CARE AND DON'T WANT TO BE SARCASTIC(MAYBE), I WANT TO HELP, THAT'S ALL, BY NOT POSTING THESE MESSAGES I THINK ITS A DISSERVICE TO ALL CREATORS BY SHARING THE POSITIVE THOUGHTS OF OTHER CREATORS IN A PLACE THEY ALREADY VISIT
BESIDES, ITS ONLY BEEN 1 MESSAGE SO FAR AND A FEW RESPONSES
HERE ARE THE SOLUTIONS:
1) I POST THE MESSAGE OR ANY OTHER MESSAGES AND YOU LET IT PASS UNTIL A NEW POST COMES UP
2) IF I ASKED THAT CREATOR FOR A RESPONSE, DOES NOT MEAN FOR YOU OR ANYONE ELSE TO INJECT YOUR 2 CENTS INTO IT UNLESS ITS A POSITIVE ONE THAT EXPANDS ON THE SUBJECT
3)IF YOU CHOOSE TO INTERJECT A RESPONSE THAT IS WARRENTED OR NOT THEN I WILL RESPOND BACK, THE CONVERSATION WILL GO ON AND ON UNTIL ONE OF US CONCEEDS OR AGREES TO DISAGREE
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
SO DO YOU FEEL SPECIAL NOW THAT I RESPONDED TO YOU?
WHAT'S NEXT? YOUR GONNA TALK ABOUT MY MOMS?
YOU AND OTHERS SHOULD KNOW YOUR FEEDING THE FIRE, THE MORE YOU RESPOND THE MORE BLOG ROOM I TAKE UP AND THE LESS THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON YOU AND INSTEAD ON ME
SO....
ANY MAINSTREAM TAKERS?
:)
PEEZ, KEEP DA CHANGE YA FILTHY ANIMALS
hey comikxguy, easy big guy!!:) you're way too sensitive. kev means no harm and it's all in light fun. I know this only because we go way back. that's the problem with the web. it's hard to emote.
cheers,
robin
Comikxguy,
Yowza. You totally misinterpreted my response. I was being sincere on Robin's blog. We all too often forget that we got into art because it was enjoyable and fun. I really did think your post was insightfull and would like to see other reminders to keep it real.My reasoning for doing a sketchbook in the first place is to connect with like minded people. I definitely won't make a profit from the massive expense of the printing, table costs, room, and plane. In fact,..i will be in the hole.But,..to make new friends it is worth it. From your response i guess you will not be one of them eh ?
-KB
Seriously Comikxguy,..i'm all about the love man. I don't like negativity. Or online battles. You love the medium as do i. Let's just get along my friend.
"OF COURSE I'M HOPING YOU WERE BEING SERIOUS AND NOT SARCASTIC"
:)
"I was being sincere on Robin's blog."
"no harm and it's all in light fun."
it's all good guys :)
i was just messing with you too :)
just pulling your leg :)
just riffin'
just seeing how far you were going to take this
i was going to go a few rounds with ya
it would have been interesting to get even more guys into it but then again i alone can't take the time to respond to everyone, just imagine guys like peter david and some of those other outspoken guys, man :)
it would have been fun :)
OH YEAH JIM LEE! WELL YOU SUCK...
"I really did think your post was insightfull and would like to see other reminders to keep it real."
WILL DO IF ANY MORE COME UP, I'LL SEND THEM TO YA :)
BUT IT WON'T STOP ME FROM POSTING GREAT QUOTES FROM GREAT CREATORS ON OTHER BLOGS, IF IT COMES UP, I'LL DO IT AGAIN
"THIS IS MORE FUN, WHEN I GET TIRED OF IT, I'LL PUT IT ON A BLOG"
"that's the problem with the web. it's hard to emote."
"I DON'T THINK THESE BLOGS ARE JUST FOR BROWN-NOSING AND PUMPING UP EGOS
THE INTERNET IS GIVEN TO US TO GIVE US THE OPPROTUNITY TO BE HEARD"
"hey comixguy, since i am a big proponent of free speech

The only time i think i would do that, is to stop abuse and

keep the love up!!"
and I have been heard, thankx
"I REALLY DO CARE"
"I WANT TO HELP, THAT'S ALL"
"BY NOT POSTING THESE MESSAGES I THINK ITS A DISSERVICE TO ALL CREATORS BY not SHARING THE POSITIVE THOUGHTS OF OTHER CREATORS IN A PLACE THEY ALREADY VISIT"
keep the love up!!"
YA KNOW I WILL :)
"My reasoning for doing a sketchbook in the first place is to connect with like minded people."
AND I AM OF THAT LIKE MIND BTW I DRAW AS WELL MAYBE YOU CAN HELP ME
lets put away the childish "desire to be very grown up."
"to make new friends it is worth it."
"Let's just get along my friend."
cool :)
WE'LL HANG OUT NEXT WEEK OK, BUDDIES ? BUT ONE OF YOU IS BUYING :)
I GOT A NEW ONE FOR YA FROM ERIK LARSEN'S BLOG ON NEWSARAMA:
MAKING MISTAKES
Making mistakes is part of the human condition. It's what we do. It happens. Sometimes the errors that see print are a case of sabotage - like the guy drawing in a pecker on Bucky on the yellow plate of a Captain America reprint collection - but most often it's simply human error. Sometimes you get so close to it that you can't see what it is anymore. And sometimes folks just let things slide because, "Hey, it's only a comic book."
Those people should be taken out behind the barn and horsewhipped.
We should care. We should make an effort. And I realize that in years past creators had to churn out pages at such a breakneck speed mistakes were inevitable.
Costumes and details would change from page to page and panel to panel, but that creator's mortgage loomed and their baby need diapers so they had to depend on the inker and editor to catch things as they barreled along, but that's not so much the case these days with higher page rates in place. When comics cost a quarter, they didn't need to be very good for a reader to feel as though they got their money's worth. At $3 or more a pop, they'd better be damned near perfect.
And we try.
But at the end of the day, we're all human. And the best we can do is the best we can do.
We'll do our best to get it right the next time.
Wish i could make it this year, would've been cool hanging out there. Be there next year for sure.
Have a blast there bro!
